Avatar 2 Has Secured Its China Screening – What Does This Mean?

The blockbuster that everyone is waiting for has a strong foundation to break the box office

Avatar: The Way of Water has secured its much-anticipated theatrical release in China, with local authorities giving Disney the green light for its arrival.

This is the first Disney blockbuster film since 2019 that manages to get the “OK” from the strict Chinese authorities due to censorship. It is a key event as China had sidelined many Hollywood releases amid the pandemic, especially those from Disney.

Avatar, however, has a special connection with Chinese audiences because the first film in 2009 became an unprecedented commercial success. It was so big that in China Avatar took 9% (equivalent to $260 million) of its total revenue to date from its $2.9 billion box office haul.

In China, Avatar 2 will be shown on December 16, the same day as the US and the rest of the world. In fact, the official poster for the Chinese market was also published:

Why is it so important?

Securing the huge market of China, which is also the largest in the world, it now has a serious advantage and a chance to break box office records. Suffice it to say that the last two highest-grossing films of all, Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.9 billion) and 2022’s top-grossing ” Top Gun: Maverick ” ($1.4 billion) couldn’t to be shown in China.

And based on the good track record that Avatar has in China, the sequel can spread its wings and gallop at the box office. Now as to whether it will break the record of the first Avatar, that seems extremely difficult – even unlikely – based on the shrunken post-pandemic box office. However, there is also the saying “never say never”.

Avatar 2: The huge amount needed at the box office to not “get in”
