Apple CEO: The average person can’t explain what the metaverse is
The company does not embrace Mark Zuckerberg’s vision
Lately we have heard many companies talking about and investing in the implementation of the metaverse , which of course most of them define differently. In fact, huge technological giants have also entered the race, such as Mark Zuckermberg ‘s Facebook , which is the most characteristic example, completely changing even its name, to Meta .
As it seems, Apple , one of the largest technology companies on the planet, does not embrace Mark Zuckermberg’s vision and although it is rumored that it is preparing its own AR headset, having added Augmented Reality features to iPhones, it sees things quite differently.
In particular, the head of Apple, Tim Cook, gave a relevant interview to the Dutch media Bright , in which he revealed the reason why he has never publicly used the term metaverse. In more detail, Cook stated:
I think it’s always important for people to understand what something is. And I’m really not sure if the average person can explain to you what the metaverse is.
On the other hand, VR , virtual reality , is a more straightforward technology that has several useful aspects, according to Cook.
It’s something you can really get lost in. And this can be used in a good way. However, I don’t think you’d want to live your whole life like this. Virtual reality is for specific uses, not a good way to communicate. I’m not against it, but at least that’s how I see it.
At this point it’s worth mentioning that behind the scenes Meta has strong feelings about Apple’s perspective on the metaverse. Specifically, through a recent report by the Verge, we learned that the head of the tech giant, Zuckerberg, had told his employees during the summer that Meta is in a “very deep, philosophical conflict” with Apple regarding the metaverse.
