Record fine on Instagram by the European Union for the data of minors
The company will appeal
After a two-year investigation, the European Union fined Meta €405 million . Specifically, the investigation focused on two ways Instagram was violating the Union’s GDPR rules. The first allowed underage users aged 13-17 to create business accounts on the platform, which made their contact information publicly available. The second reason was that Instagram made some minor accounts public by default.
This is the third and largest fine imposed on Meta, while other investigations into tech giants are ongoing.
Meta said it stopped making minors’ accounts public by default a year ago, while it disputes the way the fine was calculated and plans to appeal.
