Europol warns of criminal use of ChatGPT

Europol issued an official statement yesterday, warning of the possible abuse of ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence, in terms of phishing attempts, disinformation, cybercrime, as well as ethical issues.
As the capabilities of LLMs (large language models) like ChatGPT continue to improve, the potential abuse of these types of AI systems by criminals offers a dystopian perspective.

Europol believes that ChatGPT’s ability to reproduce language models that simulate the speech style of specific people or groups makes it ideal for cybercriminals, while its ability to deliver text that looks real at such speed and scale makes it an ideal tool for propaganda and disinformation, as it allows users to produce and spread messages of a particular rhetoric with almost no effort. Finally, he warns that even criminals with minimal technical knowledge can turn ChatGPT into a tool for generating malicious code.
