Deadly earthquake in Turkey and Syria: The videos making the rounds on social media   

The largest for 100 years in the country

Images and videos of biblical destruction have been making the rounds on social media in the last few hours since the huge earthquake that hit central Turkey and northwestern Syria in the early hours of Monday, January 6, and was felt even in Cyprus.

In more detail, the earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and is one of the largest recorded in Turkey in the last 100 years . Over 3,000 people have been injured and over 500 deaths have been confirmed so far. The epicenter of the earthquake was 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Posts on social media show the terrifying “fury of nature” , with buildings collapsing, debris, roads blown open and gas pipelines engulfed in flames. Below you can see some of the footage and images circulating, with the topic trending on Twitter with nearly half a million tweets in a matter of hours.
