TikTok: 113 million videos ‘taken down’ for content infringement, but are they enough?

The most famous social network published official transparency figures for this quarter

TikTok, being the most famous social media platform on the planet right now, has published its quarterly transparency report to show the progress it is making in shaping the security of its users.

Between April and June 2022, it said it “downloaded” more than 113 million videos for violating its terms of use. If that number sounds big to you, it’s a drop in the ocean of videos shared on TikTok, as 113 million represents just 1% of the total videos uploaded in that quarter.

44% of the videos removed and the vast majority had to do with violating terms of use regarding the safety of minors, followed by categories such as illegal activity, selling goods, adult nudity, and sexual activity.

Videos removed from the platform thanks to TikTok’s automated systems, i.e. with the use of artificial intelligence, increased significantly and numbered around 48 million videos in the last quarter.

Almost 96% of videos in the April-June quarter were removed before a user reported them to TikTok. The company said it uses automated tools and human review to weed out content that could violate its terms of use.
