Avatar 2: James Cameron likens it to “The Sopranos” and not a “Disney movie”

The sequel will have an emphasis on plot and emotion

Much has been said about Avatar: The Way of Water lately, especially from its director and creator, James Cameron. Now in a new interview he compared Avatar 2 to the legendary series ” The Sopranos ” wanting to make an analogy about how much more emphasis the sequel will place on plot and emotion.

All this thanks to the long duration that will reach 3 hours and 10 minutes .

Speaking to Total Film, the legendary director said the following:

“The goal is to tell an extremely compelling story in an emotional context. I would say the emphasis in the new film is more on characters, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotion. In the first film we didn’t spend as much time on relationships and the emotion than in the second film, and it’s a longer film because there are more characters to serve. There’s more story to serve.”

But where does James Gandolfini aka Tony Soprano and the iconic HBO series fit with Avatar 2 ? But of course in that the story will focus on the family, but not in the traditional way of Disney films. As it typically states:

“People are saying, ‘Oh my God, a family story from Disney? Just what we want…’ This is not that kind of family story. This is a family story like ‘The Sopranos’ is a family story.”

Avatar 3 has already been filmed

For those who don’t know Avatar 3 was filmed consecutively with Avatar 2 or otherwise “Avatar: The Way of Water” so it looks prepared for the bad eventuality. He even states that he has transferred some scenes from Avatar 2 for Avatar 3 (which still has no official title). In fact, he is under no illusions about the fact that these are unimaginably expensive films, despite the fact that he is one of the few directors out there with the power to take such a large check from such a colossal studio.

“There are a few things I took away [from The Way Of Water] that I want to incorporate into the third film, hopefully,” he said. “These are unimaginably expensive movies. Before the pandemic it was a controversial business case to make a movie that costs that much. At this point, we just have to go ahead and see what happens. But what I know right now is this: we deliver three hours of an almost immersive experience [with The Way of Water].”

Let’s just mention at this point that the budget of Avatar 2  exceeds $250 million , while the total of the four sequels will cost Disney more than $1 billion – if they are all made.
