Mirrors in elevators are not for selfies but for this reason  

There is a reason they are there but not for the one they are commonly used for nowadays

You will have noticed that in every elevator there is usually a mirror , which nowadays is usually used to take selfies. But have you ever wondered why there are actually mirrors in elevators? Certainly not for the usual reason we mentioned above. 

The main reason there is a mirror in the elevator is for safety reasons , as you are sharing a closed and narrow space usually with strangers. Therefore a mirror helps to be more aware of the space and what is happening around us and to watch for any suspicious movement . 

Of course, it is said that when the first elevator appeared, which was in New York in the distant 1857, its going up and down was so slow that it caused anxiety to the occupants. That’s why they thought that putting a mirror on one side of the elevator would make people feel more comfortable as they would see their surroundings better . 

Also, another reason they exist is for disabled people , which wheelchair users can get in and out of the elevator much easier. 

Also, a mirror helps those who go up in elevators and suffer from claustrophobia , to give them a feeling that the space is much more spacious than normal .
