Yes, you read that right! The iPhone 14 may not have arrived well on the market and the Fat Out event is only a few twenty-four hours away, but the rumors about Apple ‘s next model , the iPhone 15 , have officially begun.
Going into details, the trusted media outlet Nikkei Asia carries exclusive information about the main processor of the next-gen iPhones . More specifically, the American technology giant wants to switch to smaller lithography chips and specifically intends to jump from 5nm to 3nm.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the terminology, when a processor is built with smaller nanometer transistors it means it can accommodate more, which translates into a significant performance jump . At the same time, it is more energy efficient , which means longer battery life in the case of the iPhone, and it also needs less cooling.
According to the media’s information, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will not use the brand new 5nm A16 Bionic chip. Instead, Apple will use TSMC’s new 3nm N3E technology, which is one of the largest chip packages in the world, for the A17 Bionic .
TSMC had started from 2018 to invest significantly in the production of 3nm processors. Specifically, it spent $19.5 billion on a new factory in the South Taiwan Science Park. Despite the pandemic and ongoing supply chain issues, TSMC aims to start mass production of 3nm chips in the second half of this year. At the moment it is not entirely certain whether it will manage to stick to the schedule, but since the iPhone 15 is expected in September 2023 or later, there is certainly plenty of time.
For the record, according to TSMC data, the transition from 5nm to 3nm will bring 70% more density for processors, with a 15% increase in performance and 30% better consumption. If we consider that the iPhone 14 Pro has already escaped in front of the benchmarks , the first rumors suggest that the iPhone 15 Pro will be a really powerful smartphone.
