Halo Infinite: Huge part of the game was “cut” before the release
There were plans for a much bigger world and more biomes
Halo veteran Joseph Staten, who took over Infinite after its disappointing initial launch in 2020, recently took part in an episode of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ Game Maker’s Notebook podcast, revealing a lot of interesting details about what went on behind the scenes with Halo Infinite .
Specifically, Staten revealed that 343 Industries ‘ original plans wanted Halo Infinite to have a larger open world for the campaign, with more biomes . However, a huge part of the game was “cut” before release, partly due to what turned out to be limited development time.
In more detail, Staten stated:
The team went through several different versions of the overall scale and variety of environments before I joined the team. Even after I joined, we had to make decisions about where to scale back.
Afterwards, the talented creator pointed out that the main problem was the time, which was not enough for the graphics to reach the level they should. Regarding this, he added:
We didn’t have the time, the time to pursue the level of display in as wide a variety as we would have liked. We made huge strides from the E3 demo to the release of the game, but we had to scale back and make targeted cuts.
In the end we didn’t take too much away from the open world, but as far as I know, from the original plans there was a pretty significant reduction compared to what the team had hoped to be able to achieve.
For the record, the original Halo Infinite announcement trailer showed biomes like a desert, which never appeared in the final game. Somehow, the fact that the entire campaign takes place in a single biome ended up being one of the biggest criticisms of the game.

For the record, Halo Infinite multiplayer is available completely free for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam or the Microsoft Store. On the other hand, the game’s campaign is available for a fee on the same platforms, as well as for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
The title is now in its second season, during which, specifically in August, the co-op option for the Halo Infinite campaign is expected to finally arrive for everyone, while in September Forge will also come to the game. The season is expected to last six months and will thus end on November 7.
