‘These are unimaginably expensive films’ admits James Cameron
James Cameron, the creator and director of the Avatar films, made a surprise statement about the fate of Avatar 3, 4 and 5 as time counts down to his sequel, ” Avatar: The Way of Water ” which will premiere worldwide in theaters in December.
Speaking to Total Film he revealed in a completely honest way that maybe the Avatar franchise will end as a trilogy, which will be judged by its course at the box office. We remind you that the Avatar sequels reach up to Avatar 5 .
If Avatar 2 brings the world and does the numbers that Disney wants then this will also mark the continuation of the franchise with its original plan. However, Cameron seems prepared for plan b to complete Pandora and Jake Sully’s story with Avatar 3 .

The market might tell us we’re done in three months, or we might be half-done, which means, “Okay, let’s finish the story with the third movie and not go on endlessly,” if it’s just not profitable… We’re in a different world now than when I was writing this stuff. It’s the double whammy, the pandemic and streaming. Or, on the contrary, we might remind the world what it means to go to the movies. This movie certainly does that. The question is: how many people care now?
Avatar 3 has already been filmed
For those who don’t know Avatar 3 was filmed consecutively with Avatar 2 or otherwise “Avatar: The Way of Water” so it looks prepared for the bad eventuality. He even states that he has transferred some scenes from Avatar 2 for Avatar 3 (which still has no official title). In fact, he is under no illusions about the fact that these are unimaginably expensive films, despite the fact that he is one of the few directors out there with the power to take such a large check from such a colossal studio.
“There are a few things I took away [from The Way Of Water] that I want to incorporate into the third film, hopefully,” he said. “These are unimaginably expensive movies. Before the pandemic it was a controversial business case to make a movie that costs that much. At this point, we just have to go ahead and see what happens. But what I know right now is this: we deliver three hours of an almost immersive experience [with The Way of Water].”
Let’s just mention at this point that the budget of Avatar 2 exceeds $250 million , while the total of the four sequels will cost Disney more than $1 billion – if they are all made.
