ASUS proposes a power supply up to 1200W for its RTX 4090!

Time to upgrade?

In a few days from now, Nvidia ‘s new GeForce RTX 4000 graphics cards , which are based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, are expected to hit store shelves . We are talking about the GeForce RTX 4090 , GeForce RTX 4080 16GB and GeForce RTX 4080 12GB , which promise significantly better performance than their predecessors.

Of course, in addition to a jump in performance, the new models also jump in consumption, even adopting the new PCIe 5.0 12-pin power connector that is present in ATX 3.0 power supplies, which in practice means that a special adapter is required for use with older power supplies . Nvidia itself recommends at least an 850W power supply for the RTX 4090, 750W for the 16GB RTX 4080 and 700W for the 12GB RTX 4080.

However, it seems that these requirements do not apply to all the different models that are going to come to market from Nvidia’s various partners, which may have higher clocks and therefore higher consumption. Somehow, ASUS has now released an updated PSU recommendation table, recommending in some cases that users have up to a 1200W PSU!

More specifically, if you have a Ryzen Threadripper processor or an Intel HEDT model, a 1200W power supply is recommended to use an ASUS RTX 4090, 1000W for the 16GB RTX 4080 and 850W for the 12GB RTX 4080. Accordingly, the company recommends 1000W if you have a Core i9 or Core i7 or Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 and 850W for a Core i5 or Ryzen 5, always regarding the RTX 4090.

The detailed table released by ASUS follows below.

As a reminder, the RTX 4090 is expected to hit store shelves on October 12, while the release of both RTX 4080 models is scheduled for November.
