Will Avatar 2 be as successful as the first film? – James Cameron answers
“We will see…”
James Cameron has under his belt two of the most commercial films in the history of cinema. Of course we are referring to Titanic , but also 2009’s Avatar , which Avatar is about to receive its sequel, after almost 12 years. The film in question is the highest grossing film in history with $2,847,397,339 in revenue and that number is set to grow even more as it returns to theaters soon.
However, after all these years, will people return to cinemas to watch Avatar: The Way of Water ? The legendary director gives his own answer to The New York Times . Initially, even from the first trailer – which measured 150 million views on the first day – it seemed that people are “baked” to go to the cinema, but Cameron himself says that he is not sure if the new film will have such a big resonance.
I was worried that I’d stretched the Avatar tie-in too much, since Avatar 2 comes about 12 years after the first film. All this until we play the trailer and see that it got 148 million views in 24 hours… There’s this barely visible, but puzzling beginning where someone is like, ” Wow, we’ve been waiting a long time to see this, but I remember how cool it was then .” Is that in our favor? I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Cameron also answered a question about whether or not audiences would relate to the characters and direction of The Way of Water, given that more than a decade has passed since the first film. As he says, he’s not sure about that either and added that if Avatar 2 had come out two years after the first film, it would – in theory – have bombed the theaters. But then again, nothing is certain in Hollywood after all.

James Cameron set foot to make Avatar the way he wanted it to be, ignoring everyone
The synopsis of Avatar: Way of the Water is as follows:
Avatar: The Way of Water takes place more than 10 years after the events of the first film and begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the suffering that follows them, the extremes they will reach for to stay safe, the battles they will fight to stay alive and the tragedies they will endure.
The sequel stars: Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.
Avatar: The Way of Water will be released on December 15 in Greek cinemas. What do you think? Will the world go to the cinema to see Avatar: The Way of Water or is it not so “baked” anymore?
