Hear the eerie sound of a solar storm (Audio)

When it falls into the Earth’s magnetic field

The sounds we hear from transmuting cosmic events are usually eerie, and the sound of a solar storm striking the Earth’s magnetic field is no exception. The European Space Agency ( ESA ) has released the sound of our planet’s magnetic field as it protects us from cosmic radiation and charged particles from the solar wind.

Of course recording the sound from this phenomenon cannot be done simply by pointing a microphone at the sky. It took collecting data from three ESA Swarm satellites and converting it into sound.

The team used data from the Swarm satellites , as well as other sources, and used these magnetic signals to create an acoustic representation of the field. The project was certainly an interesting exercise in combining science and art. The hum of the Earth’s magnetic field is accompanied by a representation of a geomagnetic storm that resulted from a solar flare on November 3, 2011, and it sounds very scary indeed.

In fact, in Copenhagen’s Solbjerg Square , 30 speakers have been installed which broadcast this sound three times a day.

We set it up so that each speaker represents a different location on Earth and demonstrates how our magnetic field has changed over the past 100,000 years.
