Tesla has just lost its head of artificial intelligence Andrej Karpathy
While there is talk of other important departures
Tesla has just lost a very important and high – ranking executive. We are talking about Andrej Karpathy , head of the company’s AI department and a key member of the Autopilot autonomous driving software development team.
Karpathy himself brought the news to the limelight, stating through his personal Twitter account:
It has been my great pleasure to help Tesla achieve its goals over the past 5 years, and the decision to part ways was a difficult one. In that time, Autopilot has evolved from a simple lane-keeping aid to navigating city streets, and I look forward to seeing its extremely strong team continue this momentum.
I have no specific plans for the future, but I plan to spend more time exploring my long-time love of technical work in artificial intelligence, open source, and education.
Apparently, there is no hostility or disagreement behind the departure. Notably, Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly thanked Karpathy for his contributions, stating:
Thanks for everything you’ve done for Tesla! It was an honor to work with you.
At this point it is worth mentioning that according to a report by The Information , Karpathy is not the only Tesla executive who left. Specifically, a senior director focused on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) has also left, as well as Chris Rollins, senior director of software in Tesla’s energy division. Finally, it is reported that Kristen Kavanaugh, a senior director also from the DEI department, resigned last month.
For the record, a few days ago it was known that Tesla fired 200 of its employees who worked on Autopilot.
