Iran has shut down the internet due to violent protests in the country
Women cut their hair and burn their headscarves
Iran has blocked internet access in some areas of the country where protests are taking place after the death of a woman at the hands of authorities. Demonstrations continue in over 50 cities in Iran for the fifth day in a row today, and have started to take place in other countries such as Turkey. These are the biggest protests in years, with thousands of women burning their headscarves and cutting off their hair.
It all started when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested and beaten by the Ethos Police because she was not wearing her headscarf properly. While in the department, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. After three days in a coma, he expired.
The Iranian government, in an effort to quell the protests, has restricted internet access in Tehran and other cities across the country. Access to Instagram and WhatsApp is also impossible. So far, security forces have reportedly killed 10 protesters and injured around 1,000. The arrests are also countless. The protesters, women and men, are calling for the repeal of the law that criminalizes the removal of the headscarf, while they also want the Moral Police to be abolished.
