WT: Social | The co-founder of Wikipedia presents the alternative to Facebook
In an effort to combat fake news, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales unveiled Wikitribune two years ago , a platform on which reputable reporters could post. The platform has not been particularly successful, so Wikitribune changes form and becomes a social networking platform called WT: Social .
Wales wants WT: Social to become an alternative to Facebook and Twitter, allowing its users to share articles and communicate. With one major difference though. WT: Social will be funded by user donations, not ads .

The social media business model of pure advertising is problematic. The big winner seems to be low quality content.
WT: Social will not have a logarithmic timeline based on the popularity of a post, but it will display the most recent reports first, and maybe an upvote key. It has gotten 50,000 users in a month, with Wales saying the target is 50 million.
We will cultivate an environment in which malicious people will be removed because this is the right thing, not because they suddenly affect our purpose.
