YouTube is testing the waters…

You may need to pay a subscription to watch videos in 4K resolution on YouTube in the near future. As MacRumors first reported, following dozens of user reports on Reddit and Twitter, YouTube is asking some to upgrade to a Premium subscription if they want to watch videos in 4K resolution .

However, it has not been clarified which countries or devices YouTube is conducting this test, and it is also not clear if this is a simple test or a gradual locking of the analysis in the Premium subscription.

So, after testing up to 12 ads on YouTube for non-Premium users, now some users reported that they also have to get a Premium account just to watch videos in 4K. pic.twitter.com/jJodoAxeDp

This report comes in addition to YouTube’s recent tests with more ads for its regular users, which was up to 12 ads before each video, while it is currently one to two ads. YouTube Premium subscription costs €11.99/month.

In theory YouTube could increase the subscriptions of its Premium subscribers by forcing its users to watch videos in 4K quality.
